History Center of Olmsted County

Established in 1926, by its founder Burton Eaton, the History Center of Olmsted County collects preserves, and interprets the history of Olmsted County. This independent not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization is governed by its membership through a board of directors. Today the History Center of Olmsted County actively serves Olmsted County and the Southeastern Minnesota region by collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history and heritage of the region and offering a varied presentation of educational and outreach programs, special events, museum exhibits, a research center, and archives.

Mayo Clinic Tours

Mayo Clinic offers a free guided tour for patients and their guests while they are at Mayo. The tour includes a 15-minute film about Mayo Clinic, followed by a one-hour walking tour of the downtown campus. The tour is offered at 10am Monday through Friday. Mayowood Mansion

Dr. Charles H. Mayo, co-founder of the Mayo Clinic, built Mayowood in 1911. He lived in it until 1939. The estate features gardens and Dr. Mayo’s decorative arts collection. Over 40 rooms are furnished in French, English, Spanish, German, and American antiques.

After taking ownership of the mansion in 1965, the Olmsted County Historical Society operated Mayowood Mansion as a historic house museum. The mansion has been maintained as it was when last occupied by Doctor and Mrs. Charles W. Mayo and is used to interpret the lives of this famous medical family.

Oxbow Park and Zollman Zoo

Oxbow Park offers almost any outdoor enthusiast a chance to pursue his or her favorite activity: hiking, camping, fishing, and picnics. Park facilities include hiking trails, a campground, and four picnic areas, each with a covered shelter. One of the areas also has playground equipment, and a ball field is maintained during the summer for public use. Oxbow campground if located in a semi-primitive area and has 30 campsites available, running water, restrooms, and showers. These facilities, in connection with the nature center and Zollman Zoo, offer any visitor a number of ways to enjoy leisure time outdoors.

Plummer House of the Arts

The Plummer House of the Arts serves as a tourist attraction and as a facility for weddings, receptions, meetings, instructional classes, and parties for groups of up to 100 people.  The facility is under the general supervision of the director of parks and recreation.  Rental of the house includes the grounds.
